Reflection from first field placement at Bernard Long Elementary School
  • Today I got to observe a special Education teacher in their classroom. She has a small group of students from each grade, different grades are in different groups. While helping one student out with a worksheet on breaking numbers down, I made the concept relatable to sharing candy with me, because it was going to be Halloween the following month. I explained to the student while using manipulatives that the large number was the amount of candy she received after trick or treating. Then I explained that the remaining blocks were the candy that was still at the store and will not be included in our written problem. The I asked the student to give some of the "candy" to me, Ms. House, and keep the rest to herself. This then created our problem of my candy plus her candy, equaled the total number that was split up between us. This seemed to help the student to understand parts of a numbers and how to create an addition problem with those numbers. After I was certain the student understood this concept, I let her try some problems individually, I then moved on to help another student. While assisting another student and explaining the same concept to him I heard my first student working the next problem out loud. She said "Give some candy to Ms. House then I keep some. How many did I give to Ms. House?"

Mr. Wilson has his 5th grade students go out and observe the changing tree that is across the street from the school. This ties in math, science, English, and art all into one lesson.

The students will record their observation result onto a worksheet which they later turn in for an assignment that is graded.
